DEMAND: Cleveland Public Art issued a competition to add artwork to the outside of an exposed 5 level concrete parking deck. On the ground floor, a new bike station will be built to house bikes as well as lockers and shower facilities for bikers in downtown Cleveland.
SKETCH: The resultant entry is a combination of built as well as painted media. The beacon of the piece is a 4+-story high, carved metal signage that is light from behind at night, an extension of the lighting from the E. 4th St. Entertainment District. The sculpture of the piece is a take on the gear of a bike using thin cable wires. The wires also serve as a medium for ivy to grow on, bring the piece to life in warmer months. There is also painted signage, the word “park” on the vertical surfaces of the parking deck. This serves as a notification to vehicles that indeed, there is parking in the structure.
